Review for this lens is planned, here are some comments and sample images:
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is a very nice lens. It is very cheap and light, actually at a mere 130g it is the lightest EF lens and it costs only $100 new. It has good color, almost no distorsion and is sharp from 2.8, actually it is sharper than any Canon Zoom at 50mm at equal aperture. And it allows you to make shots at apertures from 1.8 to 2.5, what is impossible with any zoom lens. It has some drawbacks however. It is all plastic and has very flimsy build, however I must say that I have my since 2004 and it still works fine. It struggles in harsh lighting, it is prone to flare, and it can produce harsh bokeh from contrasty background. But for the price it could not be beat, It is the most affordable portrait lens for crop cameras.
This is the lightest EF lens of all at a mere 4.6 oz. (130g). Compact and high-performance, standard lens. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens. – this is a short description from official Canon web site.
